A little more money will buy you a feeder. These come in a variety of sizes and may have individual feeding ports or consist of open wire mesh throughout. What should you fill them with? Seeds mainly. Some companies sell 'feeder seed' which is a mixture of different types. Black sunflower seed is oily and nutritious. However, smaller birds cannot crack open the husks which are inedible and generate mess. An alternative is sunflower hearts: just the delicious seed, no casing. This seed is smaller and eaten by a wider selection of birds. Into the bargain, there are no leftover husks. Sunflower hearts cost more but are so popular with birds that, for example, tits stockpile them by flying off and burying more than they eat. Mail order companies publish lavish catalogues that contain excellent guidance on choice of seed for garden birds. 'Wildbird' food sold in supermarkets may actually be poor value for money and contain a high proportion of large grain that is best suited to wildfowl.
